Since 1948, The Center for Discovery has been recognized as a leading provider of integrated medical, clinical care and education for individuals with developmental disabilities including autism and other complex conditions. Today, The Center for Discovery is recognized as a Center of Excellence in New York State and the nation for the advancement of care and treatment for individuals with autism and other complex conditions. The Center leads the world with its integrated biomedical, behavioral and environmental approach, and is recognized for the establishment of algorithms and interpersonal paradigms of care.
Located on 1,500 acres in New York State's majestic Mid-Hudson region, just 90 miles northwest of New York City in Sullivan County, The Center for Discovery is a major research and specialty center. Each year, The Center supports more than 1,200 children, adults, and their families. The Center employs a highly-trained interdisciplinary group of more than 1700 professional and para-professional staff who expertly coordinate to advance assessment, care, and intervention strategies for those with complex conditions and their families. The integrated teams of staff include primary care physicians, gastroenterologists, neurologists, pharmacists, nurses, psychologists, psychiatrists, sleep disorder specialists, special educators, physical therapists, occupational therapists, speech/language therapists, nutritionists, and a variety of other sub-specialty physicians. With its core programs focused on pediatric and adult complex conditions, The Center is at the forefront of transforming the future of complex care. Physicians, scientists and researchers from major university and medical centers throughout the county serve as advisors and lead research aimed at advancing knowledge and best practices in the care and treatment of complex conditions.

The HealthE6 Model® outlines six pillars related to health and functioning for individuals with complex forms of autism and other disabilities. This complexity typically includes co-occurring biomedical conditions and problems such as sleep disorders, gastrointestinal problems including constipation and gastroesophageal reflux disorder, seizure disorders, obesity and Type 2 diabetes, immune and metabolic problems, anxiety, and other psychiatric conditions, all of which exacerbate stress.
